New sail speed record
"Just in after the most incredible run. A whole nautical mile dipping well into the 60's on each gust. We peaked near or over 64 knots and beat our previous 500 meter average. I don't think we cracked 60 knots as a 500 meter average though. But anyway... we smashed the nautical mile record. The Trimble file is big but on the small GT31 we averaged over 55.5 knots."
Cambria and Shamrock V
Beautiful boats in Cannes. The Cambria was designed and built by William Fife and made her racing debut in Harwich at the first event of the 1928 season. More details on the Cambria web site here. Fife is closely associated with Fairlie Yachts, which is featured in a blog below.
The Cutter
The cutter was originally the name given to a boat carried by naval vessels tasked to counter the activities of smugglers, so it was designed to be fast.. The extended l/b ratio grew from 2.7 of the first yacht, Mary to 3.7 (the Pearl 1820) up to 7.2 for Spankilado of 1882. These were considered to be very beautify boats.

Regates Royales Cannes
Heavy weather meant that the races were challenging with near misses due to steering difficulties. The last day of racing was cancelled. These are some of the boats from the 87 strong fleet, moored up in Cannes.
Olympics at Weymouth
A long train journey but lovely weather and watched Patience and Bithell come second in the 470s, followed by theWomen's Elliott 6m Round Robin, where Great Britain beat Sweden. These we fantastically visible from the bank at the Nothe Fort. There were other races at the same time including the Fin (Ben Ainslie) and RS-X wind surfing, but these were in different areas and not possible to see (or specs on the horizon)
How about a renovation
There are some lovely looking boats out there, but all the advice suggests:
1. only start if you have the time and money to finish
2. It will always take longer and cost more that you think
3. Get it surveyed between agreeing a price and buying it

Hobie Cat sailing in Antibes
If you can find some wind (!) this is great fun, sailing a hobie around the big yachts in Antibes. We rented ours from Salis beach in Antibes.
Wednesday evening Medway race
A couple of times this summer I had the chance to sail with Reuben and Ali on their Sonata, in the Wednesday evening racing at Medway. The Hunter Sonata is a 22 ft sloop and Medway Yacht club has the largest fleet in the World with over 30 boats.

Alexandria Seaport
We didn't sail during our last trip to NY and Washington, but did find the Seaport Foundation which uses boat building to support and develop at-risk youth, with educational and practical experience.

If you have an iPhone you can subscribe to the podcast of the Seamaster Sailing Series. Information is here. It mainly covers the racing season - the repeated music is a bit nauseating, but for a quick sailing fix its good! I found out about the Audi Med cup series through it, and went down to the port at Barcelona one evening to see the boats.

We were already going to Nice, when we heard that Paul Spooner would be in Cannes with his newly designed Fairlie 55.
Competent Crew and Day Skipper
We sailed with Southern Sailing http://www.southern.co.uk/ for our CC and DS practical courses. Based under the Itchen Bridge in Southampton. They have an oldish but sound fleet of Sadler 34s and we sailed the same boat for most of the training weekends (Phoenix).

Wedding anniversary present on our visit to New York was an evening sail on the Adirondak 80 ft Schooner from Chelsea pier in New York out to Statue of Liberty and back - wow what a trip
Sailing restarted
I guess this is where it re-started! Mark and Sal bought a new boat, a 2003 Dufour 36, Airle Bee. The first time we went on it to celebrate their new purchase, it all came back - the adventure, the technical, the physical, the boat, being on the water in the weather...
