Cambria and Shamrock V

Beautiful boats in Cannes. The Cambria was designed and built by William Fife and made her racing debut in Harwich at the first event of the 1928 season. More details on the Cambria web site here. Fife is closely associated with Fairlie Yachts, which is featured in a blog below.

Shamrock V was was the first British yacht to be built to the new J-Class rule designed by Nicholson. She was the only J class to be built in wood, featuring mahogany planking over a steel frame. Her enormous mast was also in wood, a significant handicap with respect to Enterprise, the American defender, which has a riveted aluminium mast. The difference saved almost a ton in weight (a ton less at 80 ft above the water corresponds to around 8 tons more ballast). She was commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton for his fifth (and ultimately last) America's Cup challenge and launched in 1930.  More information here

Shamrock V and Cambria raced together, in key tests for Shamrock V in the America Cup.
